Cost-per-wear calculator

Calculate what an item costs each time you wear it. Use actual wears or explore a clearly labelled scenario, with optional alteration and repair costs.

Your item, your numbers

Use one currency for both costs. No exchange rates or price estimates are applied.

Choose a currency code, or Other. Use a decimal point, without currency symbols or thousands separators.

Add only costs already paid. Leave blank to include zero. Routine washing and future repairs are not included.

Which wears are you counting?

Use your recorded count. If you are estimating, choose projected instead.

Your numbers stay in this page. They are not saved or sent to our servers.

What does each wear cost?

Enter an item’s purchase cost and wear count to see the calculation here.

Illustrative example£120 ÷ 30 wears = £4

Not a target or a reason to buy. Simply a way to understand the use you get from an item.

How to calculate cost per wear

Add what you paid for the item to the alteration and repair costs you choose to include. Divide that total by the number of times it has been worn.

(Purchase cost + included alterations and repairs) ÷ wears

For example, a £100 item with £20 of repairs, worn 40 times, has an included cost of £3 per wear: (£100 + £20) ÷ 40. These are illustrative figures, not tested garments.

This version includes purchase cost and any alteration or repair costs already paid. It does not estimate washing, dry cleaning, future repairs or resale value. Leave optional costs blank only if you want the calculation to treat them as zero.

Actual use or a future scenario?

Choose actual when you have counted how often you have worn an item. Choose projected for an estimated or hypothetical total. A projection is conditional: it does not show how long an item will last or how often you will really wear it.

If you have worn something 10 times and want to explore 30 more, enter 40 as the projected total. Extra costs are still only those already paid, so future spending could change the eventual result.

What this number cannot tell you

A lower cost per wear is not automatically a better choice. This calculation does not measure fit, enjoyment, garment quality, environmental impact or whether a purchase is affordable. It is not financial advice or a recommendation to buy something more expensive.

There is no universal “good” result here. Use it to understand an item’s use, rather than treating an imagined future wear count as a promise.

Method and privacy

The basic cost-plus-care divided by wears method is illustrated in Kansas State University Extension’s cost-per-wear worksheet (PDF). Our calculator uses your selected currency and entered repair and alteration costs; it does not adopt the worksheet’s assumed laundry costs.

Use your own currency

Choose a currency code such as USD, EUR, AUD or INR, or select Other to work in the same currency units throughout. The formula is identical. We do not convert currencies or fetch exchange rates. Changing the currency clears entered costs so they can be re-entered correctly. Yen inputs use whole yen; other listed inputs support two decimal places.

The pound figures above are illustrative examples only. A lower number in one currency cannot be compared directly with a number in another currency.

Your entries stay private
