A number inside a wash symbol is only one part of a garment’s care instructions. Drying and ironing can require different decisions from washing. Keep the label in view and identify each symbol before assuming that a familiar programme is suitable for the whole process.
Look up the exact symbol
Clevercare’s symbol index separates washing, bleaching, drying, ironing and professional-care instructions. It is useful when two similar-looking symbols differ by a line, dot or cross. Compare the actual label with the illustration instead of relying on a remembered description. This is particularly helpful when planning what happens after the wash: permission to machine wash does not, on its own, tell you which drying or ironing method the garment allows.

Keep garment advice ahead of machine convenience
AEG’s clothing-care reference explains that the symbols are sewn into garments to describe their care requirements and emphasises following the clothing manufacturer. Use the appliance controls to implement those requirements, not to replace them. If a symbol is unclear or the label is damaged, ask the garment maker before experimenting. The two references are lookup tools; they do not mean that every fabric of the same name shares an identical wash programme.
